We use this program as a project based learning experience to understand business and leadership. Students had lots of fun as they learned.
One of the students got to the camp late. The reason she was late is that she was resisting going because she thought it was going to be boring. When she left today she told her mom, “If they taught us like this in school, we would be the best educated people on the planet!”
Students had an increased interest in Entrepreneurship. My most memorable moment was the parents and students raving over the experience.
Students who may have been quiet and more reserved begin to show leadership qualities as they use their personal skills to benefit their company.
After negotiating with the VCs to get a higher stock price, one student told me today, “I’ve never negotiated with anyone other than my mom. I don’t even ask my friends if I can have a bite of their food. I thought it would feel rude to ask for more money, but it wasn’t, and it worked!
BizWorld was my favorite unit to teach with 5th graders. I am a huge fan. I loved the multi faceted learning opportunities afforded to my students. They looked forward to being in 5th grade because they knew they would get to do this unit. Student engagement and collaboration were never higher!
Students enjoyed applying for their jobs, learning about leadership, understanding how to get money from Venture Capitalists, bank loans, and other avenues. They learned how to create surveys to find market interests and the importance of marketing their product. They stayed on task and learned a great deal! One of my groups gave up 54% of their business to the Venture Capitalist. So, they learned the importance of the majority shareholders when the VC’s came back and said they wanted to change the name, brand, and design of the bracelets. They understood why the VC’s chose what they chose though so they could earn their money back. It was a great learning experience for all teams! In a word, BizWorldPRO is superb!
Students were given an opportunity to choose BizWorld as an elective. As a social studies teacher, it is important to me to teach students how to be financially responsible, while also providing them with leadership opportunities. Students were engaged and excited to build their business. We live in the Outer Banks, where there are more family owned/small businesses then chains. A lot of my students have parents who own these businesses, so they were excited to learn the foundations while creating something of their own. Studnets were excited abougt walking into the classroom. After each session, they asked if theyc ould come back. We adapted the program by looking at small businesses and thought about how we coudl create something new to support the community as a whole.
BizWorldPRO is a great simulation with lots of math and SEL work embedded. Students display incredible focus and great teamwork. There were many “learning opportunities” about capitalism, both good and bad. It was powerful to see teams come together with unexpected successes.
